Episode 32: Nutrients for the Soul With Haley Goodrich

Growing up in the 90’s, I was no stranger to Weight Watchers. Every generation has their iteration of diet fads, but I distinctly recall the first time my mother took me to a meeting. I could palpably feel the shame on these women’s faces when they had to admit they did not lose anything, or in fact they gained something since the previous meeting. The competitiveness of some of these women was embarrassing. And the over all destructive behavior that was being rewarded when so many of these women were still not healthy struck me as so wrong, even at that young age. It was this idea of publicly humiliation, or what they thought was accountability, that gave me my first taste of dietary dysphoria. I walked away with the question, are my eating habits something I am supposed to make public? And whose input should I be considering?

I can tell you from my personal journey, that eating healthy does not always mean eating kale 10 times a day. You need to work with a professional to find out what nutrients your body needs. Please don’t fall victim to the Keto, Paleo, macro counting fads on Pinterest and Instagram. Although they may work for some, and might even work for you, it’s more important to find the proper dose and diet for your body.

Also, I would like to acknowledge that it is an extreme privilege for someone to be able to attend a private practice and receive high quality nutrition care. Many do not even have access to properly nutritious food. So what I would like you to do if you have gastrointestinal issues is create a food journal, keeping track of only two things: what you eat and how it makes you feel. When you are able to save up and go to a licensed professional, this will be a great tool to maximize your sessions.

Body positivity, fitness, and nutrition are the trinity of health and well-being. These three things must work together to create a life that works for you.
