Recommended Read – Take Two: Hungry For More

Welcome to Sam’s Recommended Reads!  This week’s selection is A Memoir (which you will be seeing a lot of in the future) entitled Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein.  Carrie is a founding member of the band Sleater-Kinney, a strong female in the entertainment industry, and half of the Portlandia duo with Fred Armisen.

This book, first of all, Carrie has a vocabulary like no other.  And she does it in a really cool, super casual way.  Just slipping in these urbane, sexy intelligent words.  Not like a pretentious guy at a cafe wearing a turtleneck with a skinny long cigarette in his hand as he compares the complexities amongst colloquial slang in inner cities.  But… definitely had my dictionary app on my phone ready to go.  That’s one of the most exciting parts about reading to me, learning new ways express myself.

As far as the content goes, this story is a wonderful reflection of Carrie’s sexual journey while finding her identity as a young rock star; a.k.a. living out of a van with a shit ton of people.  This book taught me that finding yourself is not a one time deal.  Each adventure you go on is a scavenger hunt to find the next bit, and the next, and you never ever stop finding these pieces that build you into the person you will become.

I highly recommend this book for so many reasons, but especially for anyone questioning their sexuality, no matter how you identify.  May we all find comfort in the uncharted territory.
