Imagine a world where the information that shaped our existence, the ways in which we defined ourselves, were told to us by a small group we put our trust in. A time where we based our collective identity as a people on the stories others told us. Decisions were passed down from generation to generation, decided by those someone else enlisted to be experts in this process. Visualize this scenario. Is this in nomadic times? Are we all cave dwellers sitting around a fire? Or are we enjoying cocktails at a company happy hour, listening to the stories from anyone whose title begins with the letter C.
I bet you would find it difficult to correctly estimate the number of times you’ve said the phrase, “I don’t know, Google it.” The knowledge that so much information is located in the palm of our hands does not easily escape us. In fact, it is the very basis in which many of us live our lives. We exist in a world where the information is given to us from various sources that we instill trust in. We’ve come to trust these talking heads and graphic designs as truth. Until 2016, many of you may not even have thought twice about the source of a story you heard in the break room. But as we try to rebuild our informational infrastructures, where can we find authenticity and how can we trust ourselves to verify it.
This week, I got the chance to talk to someone who works at one of the biggest names in viral content. Eli Vazquez is much more than a Buzzfeed talking head. He is a voice that will shape the future of content by championing authenticity in a oversaturated market.
